- 2002/01: Stralis. |
e armonioso. I grandi deflettori laterali canalizzano i flussi
regolabile in lunghezza, altezza e inclinazione. E' rivestito
I cambi automatizzati EuroTronic
rapporto.
serie all'EuroTronic full automated 16AS2601 in versione sovramoltiplicata.

The Iveco Stralis range of road trucks and tractors 1) Iveco Stralis: a road range entirely
renewed over four years
1) Iveco Stralis: a road range entirely
renewed over four years - the cab: exterior styling and aerodynamic functions - the driving position and dashboard - living space in the cab - the range of engines on offer, completed with the 540 HP version of the Cursor 13 - extended electronic systems to the full range of vehicle controls. To signal the completion of the transformation process, Iveco has created a new name for its range of heavy duty road vehicles: Stralis. Iveco has pursued three clear objectives from the outset: - to offer vehicles which would respond to the changing needs of transport today; - to reduce operating costs (fuel and oil consumption); - to reduce maintenance costs (service and downtime). Over the last four years progress has been gradual, without the opportunity for one big spectacular launch. The introduction of so many innovations at once did however represent a risk, in the context of the quality standards implemented by Iveco, both for the product itself, and for the training of the technicians of the service network. Iveco has chosen to progress in stages, in order to be able to test each new element in the lab, on the test tracks and in the field, putting vehicles out to pilot customers. As the new features were presented, the network technicians were trained and given the opportunity to get to know the new technologies. The stages in the evolution of Iveco heavy duty road vehicles In 1998 Iveco presented the Cursor 8, a six cylinder, 7.8 litre engine available on the EuroTech in four versions from 240 to 352 HP. The Cursor 8 was a completely innovative engine, created using state of the art technology. With electronically controlled pump unit injection activated by an overhead cam shaft, a decompression engine brake, and a new variable geometry turbocharger which adapts electronically to respond to power demands. Its maximum output of 45 HP/litre and dry weight of just 678 kg created quite a stir. In four years' intensive use on medium-heavy duty tractors, the 352 HP Cursor 8 has proved the quality of its architecture in terms of reliability and operating efficiency. On the occasion of the launch of the Cursor 8 the Iveco network also implemented a specific training programme on electronic engine management. In 1999 the 10.3 litre Cursor 10 engine was presented on EuroTechs and EuroStars, at two power outputs: 390 and 430 HP, this engine is based on the same design as the Cursor 8. Also introduced were electronically controlled braking with disc brakes (E.B.S.), CAN-BUS internal data communciation system and EuroTronic gearbox all using electronics. Iveco's transition to electronics was thus complete, and the Cursor 10 lived up to all expectations as regards reliability and running costs. At the end of 2000 the 12.9 litre Cursor 13 was fitted to the vehicles in the construction site range, up to 440 HP. At the beginning of 2001, the EuroStar range saw its latest addition in the shape of a 480 HP version of the Cursor 13. At the same time the EuroTronic full automated gearbox was introduced. Each increase in power was matched by an adaptation in the engine brake, powered by a variable geometry turbocharger to provide enhanced braking torque, up to 400 HP on the Cursor 13. 2) The Stralis Active Space cab: new inside
and out Styling which cuts fuel costs The exterior of the Stralis cab has been designed
to guarantee optimum airflow: the corners of the cab front and
bumpers are more rounded, as is the front of the high roof. The
flowing lines are the result of research into aerodynamics and
give the Stralis a modern, streamlined look. The big lateral
deflectors channel the flow of air towards the side of the cab
and effectively protect the side windows, mirrors and door handles
from mud coming up off the front wheels. The outsize grille means
increased air flow to the radiator. Trials in the wind tunnel
have helped shape the general outline of the cab, as well as
a few details, such as the sun visor, the moulded raised roof
and aerodynamic elements between the cab and bodywork, and between
the cab and semitrailer. Design and functionality Research into aerodynamics came up with a fluid outline, but left a certain amount of freedom as to styling. Iveco wanted the new range to have a powerful image, without resorting to overly aggressive elements, and at the same time to create a feeling of comfort, as well as looking good on the road. And with its roots in the land of vehicle design Iveco also had to give a touch of class to products which would be conveying its clients' image too. The famous design studio Garnero worked together with Iveco technicians and designers. Greater engine-cooling power Compared to the EuroStar, the surface of the liquid coolant in the radiator has increased from 68 to 84 dm2 (+23%), while the intercooler has gone up from 47 to 57 dm2 (+21%). These changes achieve three things. They reduce fan-operating times and cool the air in the engine in order to limit the maximum temperature of combustion. (reducing polluting emissions causes a substantial increase in temperature) Meaning the amount of energy absorbed by the braking system on the transmission is dispersed through the liquid coolant, making for more efficient braking. The air feed to the radiator is aided by the new frontal area of the Active Space cab and by the layout of the pipes and various controls behind the grille. The fan has also been given a new electronic coupling, which makes for a more gradual insertion and intermediate rotation speeds, which are slower than the engine. Iveco engineers estimate that the new cooling system means a 1.5% saving on fuel. A flexible net in front of the radiator cuts down the risk of insects entering the pipes and blocking them, and the net can be removed for cleaning. Advanced comfort The new four point air suspension with shock
absorbers and anti-roll bar means enhanced comfort, thanks to
a more efficient absorption of variations from the road surface
and the semitrailer, as well as a lower oscillation frequency.
The cab tips up to an angle of 72° without having to open
the front grille thanks to a hydraulic cylinder, which is actioned
by a standard electric pump. 2.1) Innovative cab interiors In designing the fittings of the cab we took
into account all the observations of users from the launch of
the EuroTech and EuroStar (1992 and 1993), market trends and
the evolving nature of the missions of the driver and vehicle.
After detailed market research, we came up with a variety of
different solutions for the driving space, layout of the controls
and fittings for the rest area. All of these solutions were tested
with a group of users made up of hauliers and drivers: the professionals
of the transport world unanimously approved the definitive version.
The creativity of the Iveco design division was thus able to
guarantee total comfort for the driver. In the driving seat: ergonomics and comfort The driving position has been designed to
offer each driver his or her ideal position. The seat has air
suspension, and is adjustable for length, height and tilt. It
is upholstered in velour and offers a series of seating positions
and back support. It is also heated, and comes with an integrated
headrest and integrated seat belt. The suspension can be deflated
for greater ease in getting out of the vehicle. Controls above... The centre of the steering wheel designed to hold the airbag, which will shortly be available has a number of side buttons. They can be operated with the fingertips, without letting go of the steering wheel. The buttons on the left control the radio (station selection and volume) and telephone. The buttons on the right are for navigating the menu of the on-board computer and visualising all the information on the screen at the centre of the dashboard. ...and below the steering wheel There are two steering column switches below the steering wheel. The one on the left controls visibility and lighting functions (windscreen wipers, directional lights and the switch between full beam and dipped headlights). The right column switches control the Cruise Control and engine brake, namely the decompression brake mounted as standard on Cursor engines. There is also a "speed programming" function that automatically engages the engine brake if the vehicle exceeds the speed memorised in the regulator (when going downhill for example). If the vehicle has a hydraulic transmission brake (Intarder ZF), the same switch controls this function, with four additional positions with respect to the engine brake control. The "rotating" gearstick With Servoshift assistance as standard on the two ZF Ecosplit gearboxes, the length and degree of movement of the gearstick have been reduced. The gearstick is now located on the floor beside the seat in a position which facilitates access to the centre of the cab from the driver's seat. Iveco has come up with an original feature for vehicles fitted with the EuroTronic full-automated gearboxes. The block at the right of the seat holding the gear stick can rotate 180° when the vehicle is stationary, thus completely freeing up the passage from the seat to the centre of the cabin. A screen at the centre of the dashboard The dashboard in front of the driver has a
rounded top in order to leave all the information visible independently
of the position of the steering wheel. The dashboard contains
the speedometer, total and trip mileometer, the revs counter
and the two analogue gauges which show fuel levels and the temperature
of the liquid coolant in the engine. The tachograph has been
moved to above the windscreen; for the time being it is still
in disc format, but this will shortly be replaced by the European
standard, and will record all the running parameters on a cassette
support. Dashboard controls The controls on the dashboard are divided
up logically. For instance, to the left are the switches for
the lights and full beam lights, and the front and back fog lamps,
while on the right the driver will find all the driving controls:
ASR exclusion, ABS limitation and hazard warning lights. The
other controls (interior lighting, sunroof, electric front sun
visor, power take-off, etc.) are located on the central part
of the console which faces the driver. The same panel holds the
lever for the parking brake and the controls for the heating
and air-conditioning. The panel in front of the driver above the windscreen has four standardised DIN compartments: one each for the electronic tachograph and the radio, a third for the CB and the fourth left empty. To avoid having to work on the electrics, the Active Space cab has numerous sets of wiring as standard, which can be used for various purposes. The radio (if the customer does not choose the Iveco radio). The CB, a 12V socket on the panel. A telephone support built into the dashboard, independently of the Iveco phone, which is available on request. And lastly, on the right of the central module, a 24V socket and a socket for compressed air (for cleaning by blowing the dust away), beside the diagnostic socket for Iveco service technicians use. 2.2) Living space in the cab Following market research in Europe and beyond, Iveco carried out an analysis of the missions of drivers and trucks. The following three categories emerged: - the single driver who covers medium distances, but with the regulations regarding hours of work is sometimes obliged to spend the night in his vehicle. Another variant on the same theme is when more than one driver uses the vehicle, but one of them may have to sleep on board, which is typical in the case of fleets; - the single driver who covers long distances and sleeps in the cab for several nights in a row. In this case the same vehicle is usually assigned to the driver, except on days off and during holidays; - a team of two long-distance drivers. These three categories which may be present in the same company, call for completely different fittings. For instance, in the first two cases, the passenger seat is only used occasionally. If the various options are only available in the factory, the haulier will tend to opt for a compromise, which satisfies his needs and will not have a negative effect on the subsequent sale of the vehicle. But without really making full use of all the functions or getting full value for money. With Iveco's Active Space cab, thanks to the 'decentralised' customisation option, you can get the best fittings for your needs and adapt them during the lifetime of the vehicle. Cab volume - The cab has a flat floor, for ease of movement inside. The driver's seat has been lowered by 15 cm, meaning that only three steps are needed up to the cabin, as the floor of the cab is only 1.70 metres above the ground. The driver's seat rests on a flat base, with the same configuration on the right, and if the seat is taken out the floorpan extends to the passenger door. This symmetry means that right hand drive vehicles can be created without changing the base. - The high roof means an interior height of 2 metres at the back panel, 1.96 m in front of the bunk and 1.9 m below the sunroof surround. This means that the great majority of drivers can move around upright inside the cab. The electric sunroof is fitted as standard and comes with an insect net. - The floor is carpeted, as are the under-seat storage compartments. The panels are in light grey, while the dashboard is two shades of grey. The seats and central door panels are smartly upholstered in velour, which is also used for the bunk curtain. Much care and attention has gone into all the details, the choice of materials and the "perceived level" of quality. Basic cab fittings The traditional passenger seat is optional.
The lower bunk can be converted into two separate bench-style
seats, on the left and right. These seats rest on two containers
(storage compartments) and can be linked by a board and an extra
pillow to create a 660 mm wide bunk. A folding table is fixed
to the left-hand side panel and can hold a small television set
connected to the 12V socket on the rear wall. Factory or decentralised customisation The optional features can be requested either when the order is placed, or on delivery, and mounted at the dealership or afterwards. When the vehicle is sold on, the cab fittings can be modified inexpensively. For example, if the vehicle was originally configured for a single driver, the passenger seat and a second bunk can be added at a later stage to suit a team of drivers. The three main configurations Starting from the standard configuration, Iveco proposes a variety of personalisations: I Enhanced single driver configuration II - Long distance single driver configuration III - Two driver configuration Factory-fitted options Some of the more complex optional features can only be installed at the factory, including the telephone built into the dashboard, and the cab temperature controls. Automatic or manually controlled air-conditioning and an engine-powered independent water heating system for the cab are available. The engine-powered indepent air heater is standard on all RHD Active Space cabs. Storage The Active Space cab comes with many spacious compartments as standard: five closed compartments above the windscreen; a container below the bench seat on the passenger side, and two shelves with protective netting above the doors. The container behind the driver holds the cool box (or bottle-holder) and the safe, with additional storage space to spare. The floor space under the driver and passenger seats has been converted into two containers with flaps. The upper part of the central module features a container with cover, with two can holders. Not to mention the baggage holder (available on request), which is a shelf with support and side containers to be mounted above the bunk across the entire width of the cab. 3) Cursor engines Cursor engines: sizes and performance Cursor 10-430: Maximum output: 430 HP (316
kW) from 1570 to 2100 rpm Cursor 13: 6 in-line cylinders, bore: 135 mm stroke: 150 mm displacement: 12882 cm3 Cursor 13-480: Maximum output: 480 HP (353
kW) from 1530 to 1900 rpm Cursor 13-540: Maximum output: 540 HP (397
kW) from 1600 to 1900 rpm Approval for 4 Ecopoints is available on all
engine settings. The new 540 HP Cursor 13 The Cursor 13 shares the structural characteristics of the other Cursors. The crankcase is secured with a skirt, which holds the seven bearing caps where the crankshaft rests, and the cylinder head. The timing is to the side of the flywheel for vibration-free, low noise transmission of the action of the 24 valves and 6 pump injectors. The aluminium monobloc pistons promote the dispersion of combustion heat through the cylinder water jackets thus avoiding high temperatures, which could damage the oil in the piston head. The latest addition to the range, the 540 HP Cursor 13, has been in circulation on customers' vehicles for some time now. With the benefit of four years of trials and customer usage of the other two engines in the range, the Cursor 13 boasts an operative life span, which we reckon is unbeatable. The Iveco Turbo Brake: 408 HP of constant braking power All the Cursor engines are supplied with a "turbocharged" decompression brake: the partial reopening of the valve at the end of the compression phase means that the "engine braking" action is increased, fully exploiting resistance. With the help of the variable geometry turbocharger which fills the cylinders with air, the braking power of the ITB (Iveco Turbo Brake) reaches a constant 280 kW (380 HP) at 2600 rpm on the Cursor 10. On the Cursor 13 a constant 300 kW (408 HP) at 2400 rpm, or 240 kW (326 HP) at 1900 rpm. The performance of the ITB is comparable to that of a transmission brake. Lastly, the decompression brake, which is modulated through the geometry of the turbo, means that speed can be regulated in descent. The decompression braking technique is superior to the exhaust brake, as it does not cause overheating of the upper parts of the engine. Another advantage is the fact that the heat generated when the ITB absorbs the energy is mostly dispersed in the exhaust gases and does not represent an additional workload for the engine cooling system, which thus remains free for transmission braking. 4) The new electric system 5) Transmission and braking The gearbox is supplied by ZF. The mechanical
type, which is available on request, belongs to the EcoSplit
series with ServoShift assistance, 16S181 for the 400 and 430
HP Cursor 10 engines and 16S221 for the 480 HP Cursor 13 engine.
The EuroTronic full-automated gearbox, which is the standard
for RHD trucks, is in version 12AS2301 for the 400 and 430 HP
Cursor 10 engines and version 16AS2601 for the 480 HP Cursor
13 engine. All the gearboxes have a direct top gear. The new
540 HP Cursor 13 is supplied with the EuroTronic II full-automated
16AS2601 with overdrive. Brakes: four discs and electronic control Stralis tractors and trucks come with four ventilated Knorr SB 7000 disc brakes, 436 x 45 in diameter, with pneumatic action and EBS Wabco electronic control. When the driver applies pressure to the brake pedal, a deceleration value is imposed. The electronic line connected to the brakes regulates the pressure in the tractor's brake cylinders, activating the engine braking, and the transmission brake if included and modulating the feed pressure of the trailer brakes, in order to distribute braking power evenly over the axles. If the trailer is an older model, tractor braking is kept in line with trailer braking. The state of the brakes can be visualised on the dashboard control screen. EBS guarantees the ABS (anti-lock braking system), the functioning of the brake corrector according to load and ASR (anti-skid regulation). EBS offers many advantages: a reduction of 16 metres in stopping distance at 85 km/h if the trailer has EBS; down from 7 to 3 operations to replace the pads of the disc brakes (at a distance of 650,000 km), correct distribution of wear between the axles of the tractor and semitrailer; and optimum running of the auxiliary retarder. For the client, this all translates into a sizeable reduction in maintenance costs. Additional braking power Where the situation calls for it, Iveco can
offer the ZF Intarder retarder on all versions of the Stralis
on request. This second-generation retarder features greater
maximum braking torque and reduced power absorption. 6) The advantages of the Stralis range
for the customer - Economic running. Thanks to advanced technology, the Iveco Cursor engines satisfy Euro 3 norms, with limited fuel consumption and a considerable reduction in oil consumption (the range will adopte completely synthetic oils). The aerodynamic lines of the cab and the developments in the cooling system reduce the energy required by the vehicle. The Eurotronic gearbox means operating efficiency is within the reach of all. - Lower maintenance costs. There is much less wear on the clutch, thanks to the torque characteristics of the Cursor engines and the implementation of an automated gearbox. The longer life-span of the brakes is ensured by the presence of a powerful engine braking system and the electronic EBS system, which distributes braking energy across the axles and integrates the action of the braking system into the service brake. The new electric system guarantees the best connections quality. - Lower downtimes. Longer intervals between oil changes (thanks to the adoption of synthetic oil) and brake work. Ordinary checks without disassembling; on-board diagnostic tools for trouble-shooting and rapid, precise technical assistance thanks to the new electric system and the Modus and IWT tools used by the Iveco network; all these solutions guarantee fleet managers maximum vehicle availability and an efficient maintenance schedule. - Greater productivity. The fact that the cab can be easily and inexpensively adapted to the mission of the vehicle gives the fleet manager unprecedented flexibility. - Better quality of life for the driver. The innovative solutions developed by Iveco for the interior of the Stralis Active Space cab satisfy the needs of drivers who work alone. Knowing how difficult it is for hauliers to find and keep experienced drivers, the quality of life on board and the pleasure of driving the Stralis Active Space are important factors. - Safety. Increased comfort means less fatigue during journey time and quicker recovery when resting. The rational layout of the controls avoids attention lapses. Added to the high levels of passive safety in the Stralis cab, are the vehicle's dynamic safety measures: EBS braking system, the engine brake mounted as standard, precision steering and roadholding. 7) The Stralis range of trucks and tractors The Stralis road tractor has rear air suspension as standard, with four-air bellows and set-up regulation (+140 70 mm). The tarctors 4x2 tractor are available in two wheelbases: 3.65 m and 3.80 m. The four engine sizes are available from the date of the launch, with left or right hand drive. For large volumes, Stralis offers a low height tractor with full air suspension (front oscillation: +79 51 mm back: +115 50 mm) and 295/60 R 22.5 lowered tyres. Available with a wheelbase at 3.65 m. Right or left hand drive. The 6x2 tractor with a third steered axle in front of the rear axle is available with right or left-hand drive. The wheelbase between first and driven axle is 3.8 metres. Trucks: 6x2 The trucks available from the date of the launch are all the three-axle 6x2 type. The third axle has single wheels and is behind the rear axle. The hydraulically controlled steering on the third axle is available as an option. This technology, developed almost ten years ago by Iveco, offers great advantages in terms of handling and reduced wear on tyres. Aside from the standard 6x2, the range also includes a special model for swap bodies which features air suspension with a high oscillation range (front: +200 90 mm - back: +180 104 mm). A second special model is the low high chassis frame with full air suspension (front oscillation +65 -65 mm - rear +200 - 70 mm). Wheelbases: 4.5 metres, 4.8 metres and 5.1 metres. The third axle is raisable, except on larger volume trucks, where the load transfer onto the engine shaft is accomplished simply by lightening the suspension of the third axle. Appendix n. 1 The display functions
in detail At the same time, the system controls the
electronic functions, which run the engine, the braking system
(ABS, EBS), the EuroTronic gearbox (available on request), the
tachograph, the transmission brake (available on request) and
the suspension (Ecas). A green light signals the go ahead for
ignition. Before setting off, the driver can use the right hand
buttons on the steering wheel to navigate through the menu, in
order to check the wear on the brake pads. The driver can also
check the vehicle's maintenance situation (mileage before the
next oil change or mechanical service) and read the messages
received on the built-in phone. The menu also includes functions
for customising the display screen (language, units of measurement
for the speed, consumption and temperature) and its luminosity. While driving, the following parameters are
constantly shown: From the menu the driver can see: |
